Summary
A hierarchical IP address concept, as well as a host name concept, has to be in place before the implementation of SAP. Here is a summary of the basic recommendations for IP address and host name concepts for SAP network infrastructures:
Each device attached to an IP-based network needs a unique IP address.
Multi-homed servers need a unique IP address for each network interface.
Cluster and load sharing solutions also employ unique virtual IP addresses.
Routers need a unique IP address for each port.
Use addressing only to encode topological, not organizational, information.
Limit IP subnets to approximately 500 nodes.
Allow adequate IP addressing room for future growth.
Consider using a private IP address space in conjunction with Network Address Translation.
IP names of servers must be resolved, either via DNS or with hosts files.
Reverse lookup for these IP addresses must be possible.
A backup domain name server is a must.
Consider layer-2 NIC redundancy.
Consider using EtherChannel or Balance Suite.
SAP front-ends can generally be operated with DHCP.
Multiple network protocol stacks do not hinder the operation of the SAPGUI
