Summary

A hierarchical IP address concept, as well as a host name concept, has to be in place before the implementation of SAP. Here is a summary of the basic recommendations for IP address and host name concepts for SAP network infrastructures:

  • Each device attached to an IP-based network needs a unique IP address.

  • Multi-homed servers need a unique IP address for each network interface.

  • Cluster and load sharing solutions also employ unique virtual IP addresses.

  • Routers need a unique IP address for each port.

  • Use addressing only to encode topological, not organizational, information.

  • Limit IP subnets to approximately 500 nodes.

  • Allow adequate IP addressing room for future growth.

  • Consider using a private IP address space in conjunction with Network Address Translation.

  • IP names of servers must be resolved, either via DNS or with hosts files.

  • Reverse lookup for these IP addresses must be possible.

  • A backup domain name server is a must.

  • Consider layer-2 NIC redundancy.

  • Consider using EtherChannel or Balance Suite.

  • SAP front-ends can generally be operated with DHCP.

  • Multiple network protocol stacks do not hinder the operation of the SAPGUI
